  • Language and dialect — the specific languages, dialects, and accents present in the audio
  • Speaker characteristics — number of speakers, speech rate, overlapping speech, and vocal health

Responsible use of acoustic intelligence

Phonix Lab designs its systems with human oversight at the center of every consequential workflow. We are explicit about this because acoustic and speech AI can be misused, overstated, or applied in contexts where its outputs cause harm.

Any deployment of Phonix Lab technology should:

  • Operate within applicable laws, including privacy, surveillance, and data protection law in the relevant jurisdiction
  • Include meaningful human review before any output is used to make a decision with legal, safety, or rights implications
  • Be governed by appropriate institutional oversight and accountability mechanisms
  • Apply outputs only within the data conditions and use cases for which the system was validated
  • Maintain documented procedures for challenging, contesting, and correcting system outputs

We refuse engagements we believe are incompatible with responsible use. We encourage organizations evaluating acoustic AI to review their own governance frameworks before deployment.

Limitations of AI systems

This section exists because we believe it matters. Acoustic and speech AI systems — including ours — have inherent limitations that all users must understand:

Outputs are not proof

No acoustic or speech AI system can determine — with certainty — a person's identity, intent, truthfulness, emotional state, mental health status, or deceptive behavior. Voice biometrics provides similarity evidence, not identity proof. Stress mapping provides acoustic feature readings, not psychological assessments. All outputs must be understood as inputs to human analysis, not conclusions.

Performance varies by condition

A system that performs well under controlled test conditions may perform significantly differently in the field. Audio quality, speaker health, language diversity, channel type, and recording duration all affect results. No published accuracy figure applies universally across all conditions.

Bias and representation gaps

AI systems trained on any dataset inherit the biases, gaps, and blind spots of that data. Languages, dialects, and speaker demographics that are underrepresented in training data may produce less reliable outputs. We work actively to document and reduce these gaps — but they exist and users should account for them in deployment decisions.

Uncertainty should travel with outputs

Every system output carries uncertainty. Confidence scores, similarity measures, and classification labels all have conditions under which they are reliable — and conditions under which they are not. We design our systems to communicate this, and expect analysts to treat outputs accordingly.
